PARK HISTORY

In 1990, the construction of a toll-way connecting I-85 to I-285 cut a path directly through a quiet, heavily forested north Atlanta neighborhood.  The site at Mountain Way was a staging ground for construction material and machines as a 12 lane bridge and MARTA line were built ~100 feet about the site.  The land under the bridge span which goes from one ridge to the next over the Little Nancy Creek was GDOT property and after being clear-cut was left unmaintained with very little restoration.

 

 In 2008, the City of Atlanta used this land as an access point for the 8.3 miles long Nancy Creek tunnel that was built to hold Combined Sewage and Storm Water.  Again, materials and machinery came into the area with no restoration after the construction.  The land was overgrown to the point of being inaccessible and created an unsafe environment that culminated in the violent assault of a neighborhood jogger.

 

 At this point, the neighborhood stepped in and began negotiations to have the various government agencies relinquish the land to create a City Park. With little monetary/functional support from the city, the neighborhood coalesced around the vision.
